There's an abandoned Second World War air raid shelter hidden on a Hull industrial estateĮach shelter was listed as housing between 40 to 50 individuals.ĭuring 1941 Hotham Street was hit in several air raids, with files at the Hull History Centre showing the deaths of John William Petch, George Herbert Longthorn, Audrey Petch, Clementina Petch, and John Petch, all of whom were inside the Olive Terrace Shelter when the bomb dropped on May 8 1941.įiles also show that on the terrace itself Catherine Withers, Fanny Jensen, 5 month old Philip Jensen, May Jordan, Elsie Richardson, and Margaret Sadler all died due to enemy action. ![]() The shelter was first listed in The Hull Daily Mail on Tuesday, October 24 1939, when a series of lists were published stating that the shelter was part of District Number 9, which included Crowle Street School, Ferries Street, Victoria Parade, Southcoates Lane, around Newtown Buildings, Wyke Street, Churchill Street, Lee Smith Street, and Raven Street. Historically speaking the site was owned by the Drypool and Marfleet Steam Tramway Co, Ltd which was established in 1885.
